February 2012

What's new...

If you haven't stopped in lately, we have new yarn in stock. And more is on the way. Madeline Tosh Sock and Merino Light have arrived, both fingering weight, and the colors are incredible. Schaeffer yarns are also now in store, in fingering weight, worsted, and bulky. Hand dyed and gorgeous colorways, all are named after famous women in history. Malabrigo Sock, Lace, Worsted and Rios (superwash!) are also here, and moving quickly. Malabrigo is known for beautiful kettle and hand dyed colors, and incredible softness.

Yarnie of the Month...

This year Uncommon Threads will be displaying items that highlight the work of our talented customers. Let their creativity and workmanship inspire you … come in and see the gorgeous items made with yarns and patterns from Uncommon Threads.  If you would like to be considered, bring your items in and complete one of our “Yarnie” forms.  The items must be made from a yarn that we currently carry or have carried in the past.  Our current “Yarnie” is Elizabeth Jones.

Featured Product...

Madelinetosh has been in business since 2006. Their goal was to create an "artist's palette"  of colors. They now have a selection of over 104 shades and hues. We cannot carry all of these colors, but we are sure one of the colors we have in stock will be one you cannot leave without. A few choices include Glazed Pecan, Copper Penny, Fig, and Apple Crumble.

Tosh Sock is a superwash fingering weight yarn with 395 yards per skein. The yardage is enough for a pair of  woman's sock in medium to large. It is also plied.

Tosh Merino Light is also superwash. It is a single ply of 100% merino wool in 420 yard skeins. It is enough to make a large pair of socks or a small shawl.

Stop in soon to get your choice of in stock colors and see what the yarngirls are making with their Tosh choices.

Popular Patterns....

There is quite a bit of baby knitting going on at the shop lately. Lots of babies here and on the way. So of course, many people, customers and employees, are looking for projects for spring and summer babies. Here are a few patterns I've scoured Ravelry for...

...For girls

Lila[c]loud is a short sleeved, seamless, top down cardigan knitted with 2 skeins of Malabrigo Lace (yarn is held double.) If you've never knitted with Malabrigo Lace, it's heavenly. This is a great lightweight spring cardi for a coming baby girl (and Malabrigo Lace is in stock!) One skein of Malabrigo Lace is just $10.95, so this makes a very affordable, beautiful gift. Pattern is free on ravelry.

...For boys

Milo is a seamless, top down vest perfect for boys or girls, depending on your color choice. Any dk or worsted cotton yarn would be perfect for spring and early summer. It's a great layering piece so baby doesn't get too warm and done in a cotton like Cascade Sierra, it's an easy care garment and it's fast to knit. If done in the smallest sizes, it's a one skein project. And for less than $10 a skein, it makes for an inexpensive but impressive and useful gift. Imagine making one in a few different sizes and colors to last the whole first year. Pattern is for sale on ravelry.

...Blankets

The Super Easy Baby Blanket is a great meditative beginner project and makes a beautiful gift. You pick 7 colors (or less, if you repeat colors) and knit seven wide stripes in garter stitch. It makes a very personal gift if you know what colors mama prefers. Gorgeous in all neutrals, or you can get creative and make it in jewel tones. It can be done in almost any yarn in the shop, from fingering weight to worsted or bulky. Come in and we can help you find the perfect yarn in the perfect color for the baby you're welcoming. Pattern is free on ravelry.

Friday Nite Knitting ...

Our next night of fun, food, and fiber is scheduled for February 17, 5 – 10 pm. The cost for this event is $5; please pre-register by Feb. 13 to reserve your spot.

Happy knitting!
