Skill levels

Learn to knit: No knitting knowledge or skills needed.
- Beginner: Can knit, purl, cast on and cast off.
- Intermediate: Beginner level skills plus increase, decrease, and follow simple patterns.
- Advanced: Intermediate level skills plus yarn over patterns, cables, ribbing, comfortable with pattern interpretation.
- All levels: This class is of interest regardless of knitting skill level.

Learn to Knit

Beaded Fingerless Glove
Easy fingerless gloves but with the added twist of beaded trim. You will learn how to add trim to dress up your knitted accessories. Once you have learned this technique the possibilities are endless. A small project to get you started.

Lace Shawl
Have you ever wanted to learn how to make a lace shawl or scarf but were intimidated by the graph involved? Well this is the class for you. This shawl or scarf is made following only a graph. You will learn how to follow the graph and learn what all those symbols mean.

Abigail Top-Down Sweater
Ready to move on to sweaters? Then this cute asymmetric sweater is the sweater for you. Must be proficient with beginner skills.

- Level: Beginner/Intermediate

- Materials: Abigail pattern; sizes 7 and 9 circular needles 24" or longer; size 7 double points or 16" circulars; see pattern for yarn requirements

Easy Fingerless Mitts
Easy ribbed mitts, knit on double point needles. This is a quick project and a fun way to learn knitting in the round on double pointed needles.
- 1 session: Sat, Jan 14; 1 – 3 p.m.

- Materials: approx. 150 yds. heavy worsted or bulky yarn, size 8 or 9 double point needles, stitch markers

Learn to Knit Socks
Handknit socks are so lovely you will never go back to store bought! Tackle your fears of tiny double pointed needles and working in the round with the camaraderie of fellow warriors! The basic knitting skills of knitting, purling, casting on, and binding off are required.

- Intermediate level (you must be comfortable with this level)

- Materials: size 2 double point needles, approx. 400 yds. Fingering weight yarn, pattern

Tubes & Loops
Do double points make you nervous? Have you been avoiding sock and mitten projects? Did you think "Magic Loop" had something to do with Harry Potter? We'll show you different ways to use double points and circulars to work on small diameter projects.
- 1 session: Thu, Feb 2; 10:30am - 12:30pm
- Level: Beginner & above
- Instructor: Mary-Anne
- Materials: Smooth yarn, worsted, dk, or sport; needles appropriate for yarn: double points, 1 circular of any length, 1 long circular (32" or longer, 29" is ok but not ideal). Since the intent is to learn the technique, it's not critical that the needles be the same size as long as they're within a size or two.
- Cost: $25
Homework: with any circular needle, cast on 48 sts and work 4 rows garter (knit each row) -- this piece is flat. Leave on the needles
Beaded Beret
Berets are back!! Learn to knit this stylish accessory with the added bling of beads.

- Materials: Koigu Beaded Beret pattern; Cascade Heritage Silk or Cascade Heritage Silk Paints; size 6 beads (1 package will be more than enough); sizes 1 & 2 double point and circular needles; steel crochet hook size 10.

Fixing Mistakes
Wait! Don't rip that out! We can probably fix it ... Find out how to fix most common mistakes.

- Materials: blunt tip darning needle, size F or G crochet hook, knitting needle 2 sizes (or more) smaller than your swatch needles (preferably circular, but whatever you have is ok)

Homework: with a smooth, light-colored worsted weight yarn, and size 7, 8, or 9 needles, cast on 25 sts and work 14 rows stockinette (knit odd rows; purl even rows). End after purl row. Leave sts on needle
Fair Isle Cuffs
Colorwork is easy when you use 2 hands. These cuffs are a nice introduction to stranded colorwork.

- Materials: Classic Alpaca (or a DK weight yarn) in at least 2 colors (we will discuss color choice in class); 2 size 4 circular needles (any lengths).

Knitters Math
Don't fear the numbers, make them work for you. We'll talk about gauge and why it's important, gauge swatches, pattern schematics, and how to make smart substitutions.

Cabled E-Reader Sleeve
Find out how how to cable, and cover your iPad or Kindle or Nook in style. A sleeve will not only protect your reader's screen when you toss it in your purse or backpack, but lets you show off your mad knitting skills, too!

- Level: Intermediate

- Materials: worsted weight yarn, size 7 or 8 needles, cable needle or spare double point needle.
- Cost: $25
Homework:
- Bring your e-reader, or measure the width and thickness of your e-reader
- Gauge swatch: Cast on 30 sts. Rows 1-6: knit. Row 7: k3, purl to last 3 sts, k3. Row 8: knit. Work rows 7 & 8 for 3 inches. Finish with rows 1-6. You may bring this in on the needles.
